Except for its first two chapters, If I Am Only For Myself . . . describes the American Jewish Communitys pursuit of social justice from 1944 to the present. Chapter 1 describes the values most American Jews bring with them into the voting booth, and why over the past 90 years there has been no change in the 30 point spread between how Jews and other white voters vote, notwithstanding the huge changes in the Jewish community over that period. Chapter 2 is a brief historical excursion comparing 19th and early 20th century American Jewry with the Jewish community following World War II.

The words "If I am Only For Myself...", the title of this book, are the second part of a wonderful three-part rabbinical admonition warning against selfishness and encouraging the pursuit of social justice, of caring for others. But those words follow upon earlier words that are just as significant: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" This book is about both aspects of that admonition, and perhaps even more about the third: "And if not now, when?" For after suffering the horrors of the Holocaust, Jewish leaders answered that question by saying "never again" and many began a migration to their ancient homeland, liberated from the Turks by the British in 1917. Three decades later Jews declared it a new country named Israel and it was immediately recognized by the US and USSR and many other nations. This most unusual and truly historical memoir lets the reader experience the inside story of the many significant events that have taken place since 1947. As a lawyer and Jewish communal leader, the author was personally involved in key events aimed at bringing a lasting peace to the troubled land with help from America. You will learn why and how significant events occurred and what went on behind the media curtain; and how the author's lifetime was never "only for himself". Art WardProduct details

If I Am Only for Myself Theodore R Mann 9780741473165 Books Reviews
It is no exaggeration to say that this book is one of a kind. It fills a gap in knowledge and perspective that should have been filled long ago. There is not one other book that covers this essential subject matter and makes these crucially insightful connections, illuminating that which has otherwise remained hidden in plain sight. And it does so with both lyricism and clarity, depth and surprising brevity, efficiency and compelling narrative style. If I Am Only For Myself should not only be in every Jewish studies program in North America and beyond, as a core part of the curriculum; it and the wisdom and eye-opening education it imparts should be known and read by every serious American patriot, of whatever background or religion, who cares about our society and honoring the full flower of the Founding Fathers' vision. If I Am Only For Myself is a central yet until now missing part of the education not only of most Jews, but also of the great majority of Christians and other non-Jews who make this country what it is. This brief and invaluable book may be even more valuable and enlightening for the non-Jewish reader who cares about what it takes to create and complete the promise of the good, compassionate and just society for which so many of us long.
